Hockey Update Malvern's U-19 suffered their second loss in a row, this time going down 0-3 to Fatima. The boys dominated the match, but were unable to turn superior ball possession and shots into goals. Fatima played for the counter attack and were able to punish slack Malvern defending with 2 first half goals. At the resumption Malvern came out putting even more pressure on Fatima earning a penalty stroke through a nice run from Teriq Thomas. However, Johnathan Warren's stroke was disallowed for straddling the ball. Man of the match Joshua Defour then made a good solo run, rounded the keeper and then shot wide from a difficult angle. Fatima absorbed the pressure and added their third from one of their few second half raids. The result was disappointing, but the effort encouraging.
The championship women defeated Petrotrin 5-1. Andrea Jackson opened the scoring in the 10th minute turning in a mishit Margaret Hinds shot. Five minutes later Roseanne Reyes was on hand to tap in Malvern's second. The one way traffic continued and Malvern earned a penalty stroke in the 21st minute that was duly put away by Teresa Lezama. Reyes then added her second and Malvern's forth in the 34th minute for the large lead at the half. Malvern continued to pressure in the second half and Reyes got her third item tapping in a cross from skipper Oire Trotman in the 52nd minute. The team's structure fell apart though and they started to give ground to Petrotrin leaving themselves exposed to long passes and one on one attacks on the keeper. They were punished in the 56th minute by a series of mistakes by a now encouraged Petrotrin. They nearly added another, but man of the match Liselle Parris made a goal line save and clearance. With Magnolia hammering TTDF Malvern remains in second place on goal difference.
Last night the Veterans shook off their disappointment of last week with a comprehensive 8-1 win over SHAPE. The halftime score was 2-0. Geoffrey Wilcox opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a well taken one time shot. Marlon Lee Ling then added a second in the 22nd minute, capitalising on a SHAPE defensive error. Lee Ling added two more in the second half in the 42nd and 55th minutes. David Francois scored two in the 44th and 66th minutes, Kelvin Hume scored a goal in the 56th minute and Derek Alexander scored the other in the 58th minute. The result consolidated Malvern's position in 4th place now on 14 points from 10 matches. Their next game is on Wednesday 1st August, after the Mixed Hockey Tournament.
As a result of an accident to the women of Paradise the games this weekend have been rescheduled. Malvern now have an U-19 boys match vs. Notre Dame at 11:00 am on Saturday 28th July. The Trinity women now have a match vs. Paragon at 6:00 pm on Sunday 29th July. Friday, July 20, 2007

Kyle Cowie then had to rescue a point for Malvern in the second half with an excellent tip in equaliser. They lost their second match to Paragon 1-3 (0-1 at halftime). Keon Blondell scored Malvern's only goal of the match which saw Malvern tied at 1-1 until the yellow card suspension of Ruel Warner. During his suspension Paragon scored the 2 goals to win the match. Their next match is against Fatima on July 22nd at 9:00 am.Championship Women
The women started the second round with an impressive 3-0 win over TTDF on July 8th. After a slow start the ladies started moving the ball around nicely, especially down the right wing. Eventually Hinds opened the scoring with a well taken penalty corner. Despite more Malvern pressure they were unable to add to the lead by the half. In the second half Malvern turned it up a notch and completely dominated TTDF. However, their dominance was not converted into goals until two late strikes from Teresa Lezama and Sherlan Cabralis capped off a strong performance from the team. For Lezama it was her first ever Championship goal for Malvern. On July 15th the women continued their second round campaign against Ventures. They were not as fluent as against TTDF, but still managed to take the lead through Lezama from a well worked counter attack. A defensive blunder from Lisa Marcano gifted Ventures with a chance and they converted, becoming only the third team to score on Malvern this year. Malvern came back fighting and a powerful Hinds strike from a penalty corner regained Malvern's lead. Both teams had chances, including a Ventures penalty stroke, but no further goals were scored. With Magnolias winning 7-0 over Petrotrin Malvern remains in second place on goal difference, but have a game in hand.

HMS Ocean On July 19th, Labour Day, Malvern hosted the hockey team of H.M.S. Ocean at the National Hockey Centre. The teams played 4 25-minute quarters. Young Jardel Lewis made an appearance for Malvern in goal, which made for a nervous mother who made Damian Gordon swear to protect her first born from shots. Needless to say Gordon failed miserably and Jardel had to pull off 3 terrific saves from an Ocean team determined to get on the score sheet. After the match the teams shared some drinks and Malvern was presented with a plaque. Pictures will be posted soon.

Hockey Update Most of the divisions in the 2007 outdoor league have completed their first of two rounds. Our championship women have one more match to play on Sunday 17th June at 6:00 pm. The Trinity women have a match on Saturday 16th at 1:30 pm. The Vets also have matches on Saturday 16th at 7:30pm, Wednesday 20th at 7:30 pm and Friday 29th at 7:30 pm to complete their first round schedule.
Trinity Women - playing in Trinity Zone B are currently in 3rd place on 5 points trailing Raiders with 8 and Paragon with 7. A win on Saturday will carry them level on points with Raiders.
Trinity Men - playing in Trinity Zone A are leading on 8 points from their 4 matches. TT Police is second on 7 points, but they have a game in hand.
Vets - are 5th in the 8-team league with 7 points and 3 games to play. The leaders, with the same number of games played are Notre Dame with maximum 12 points.
Championship Women - are currently second, tied with Magnolia on 16 points, but with an inferior goal difference. A draw with Ventures on Sunday would be enough for the women to end the first round on top, but they will be pushing for maximum points.
Championship men - are currently 6th, tied with Paragon on 8 points, but with an inferior goal difference. The men have struggled on both ends of the field conceeding a whopping 21 goals; only the bottom two teams have conceeded more. In 7 games they conceeded 6 goals in 2005 and 9 in 2006. In addition they suffered from not scoring their chances in games, keeping them under pressure at crucial times. A lot of work will have to be done to prevent them from Malvern's lowest ever finish in the Championship division. The previous low is 5th place in 2001.
65th Anniversary Dinner Malvern Sports Club will be having a 65th Anniversary Dinner in September. The date, venue and cost will be announced at a later date. In conjunction with the dinner is the planned launch of a Malvern Sports Club Hall of Fame. Stay tuned for further updates.

Hockey in April All the Malvern hockey teams played undefeated in the month of April. The championship women and men, trinity women and men and vets men all played at least one match each.
The championship women defeated Raiders in their league opener on April 15th 2-0. Oire Trotman and Jamila Leonce were the goal scorers in the match. On the 22nd the women earned a hard fought 1-0 win over T&T Defence Force. Cecile Wren scored the loan goal in that match. Malvern is third on goal difference in the early part of the season. T&T Defence Force and Magnolia both have 6 points, but T&T Defence Force has played a match more. The women's next match is on May 5th at 4:30 pm verses Harvard Checkers.
The championship men have only played one match so far in the league. They defeated Paragon 4-3 after leading 4-0 at the half. Albert Marcano scored 2 and Marlon Jackson and Collin Byron added the other goals in a match they should have won more comfortably. They are in 4th place in the league, but all 3 teams ahead of them have played one match more. QPCC and Notre Dame are on 6 points and Petrotrin is on 3 and have a similar goal difference to Malvern, but have scored more goals. The men's next match is on May 5th at 6:00 pm against QPCC.
The trinity women have played one match against Notre Dame on April 21st and drew 3-3. It was a good result considering that they played with 9 players in the 10:00 am heat. They even squandered 2 leads at 1-0 and 3-2. Their next match is May 6th at 1:30 pm against Raiders.
The trinity men played two matches in April. On April 21st they drew with T&T Police 2-2 and on April 28th defeated SHAPE 2-0. Joshua DeFour scored both in the Police match and one against SHAPE. Richard Sellors scored the other goal against SHAPE. Their next match is June 3rd at 3:00 pm against Petrotrin.
The Vets had their first game on April 14th against Carib postponed. They then defeated SHAPE 3-1 on April 27th. Their next match is May 16th at 7:30 pm against Notre Dame.
Hockey Opening Malvern women placed 4th and the men placed 3rd in the Trinidad & Tobago Hockey Board's opening day tournament.
The women won their preliminary group before losing to Ventures in the semi-finals on bonus points after 1-1 tie. They then lost the 3rd-4th playoff to Magnolia 0-1. T&T Defence Force went on to win the women's tournament.
The men also won their preliminary group before losing to Notre Dame 1-2 in the semi-finals. They then beat QPCC 3-2 in the 3rd-4th playoff. Notre Dame went on to win the men's tournament.
Anthony Marcano broke his left humerus (upper arm) in three places in the playoff match against QPCC. He required a plate and 8 pins to repair the bones and will need a year of recovery to determine the extent to which he can use his arm. We wish him a full recovery.
