Some Facts about the Club

Malvern Sports Club has been described as an "institution of class". The club was founded in1942 by a group of friends some of whom had known each other from primary school at Tranquillity Boys and later at Queen's Royal College. The foundation members either lived in Woodbrook or attended Queen's Royal College or did both. One thing they most definitely had in common was a tremendous love of sports and in particular football.

Some of the founding members included the John brothers, the Hinds brothers, the Pierre brothers, the Clarke brothers, Cecil Gopaul, Hamil Henley, Everald King, Val Horsford, Paul Carr, Wilbert Gormandy, the Blackman brothers and Georgie Ford.

June 1942, Siegert Square, between Alberto and Rosalino Streets in Woodbrook was the time and place where the decision to formalize this association into a club for the purpose of playing competitive football was taken.

The club's first executive committee was George John - President, Lennox Pierre - Vice-President, James Grosvenor - Secretary and Hamil Henley - Treasurer.

The name Malvern, was taken from a successful netball team, the members of whom were closely allied to the founders and later married some of them. These included Sylvia Springer -1944, Mavis Parris -1955, Lystra Blackman and Lenore Mc Tair, to name a few.

The club colours of wine and white and the design for the first club jersey were the ideas of Errol John, the distinguished playwright, brother of George John. The club's motto"Victoria Concordia Crescit" was settled on from the start but the the crest of a flying horse on a shield with a football, cricket bat and hockey stick was designed later.

The love of sport has always been key to the club's members, thus is was no surprise to discover that the club even ventured into the realms of Atlethics and Basketball during the 40's and 50's.

In summation the club contiues to be dynamic and open to change and as history will show, since the club's inception there hasn't been a decade where the club's excellence on some field of play has noy been evident. This is a testiment to the drive and determination of its members.
